ANNOUNCEMENT: CAT OR DOG EXPECTING?I am now available to help new breeders or private pet-owners with the whelping of litters. The area I can service includes Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and White Rock in BC. Rates charged will depend on general circumstances, location, time of day etc. Call and discuss this with me. My veterinarian would be willing to give a reference to anyone considering using this service and references from long-time owners of cats from me are available too. Please check the information I provide below on Cat Care Counselling for more info on other areas I may be able to help with. Producing healthy litters starts long before the actual birthing process and the more you know and can plan ahead the easier your pets whelping experience will be. |
Cat Care Counselling
Compared to the information and training available to dog owners for many years, cats have been the forgotten pet. I hope my 30 years experience as a cat owner, breeder, and rescue worker will help others understand and develop a better relationship with their own cat. The price for individual sessions and three hour seminars varies. A lower group rate may be available to rescue workers, Please call to discuss your particular situation. Following are some topics for your consideration.
GRIEF COUNSELLING FOR PET LOSS
Many pet owners do not have family members or friends who understand the depression and loneliness that can result from the loss of a pet. Comments such as "the animal was old" or "it was just an animal" can make the owners feel isolated and without support. I strive to help clients through this time using my personal experiences with loss of my animal friends, and my degree in social work.
The initial visit is done in person but subsequent sessions can be done over the phone.
BASIC CAT CARE FOR FIRST TIME OWNERS
This course covers such fundamentals as: choosing the right cat, feeding, training, buying supplies, and basic veterinary care. A discussion on letting the cat out or not will help you ascertain the risks and costs of having a cat who is allowed outside. This is taught as a seminar.
FELINE NUTRITION
The cat has unique feeding needs as a true carnivore. This 3 hour seminar will cover the following areas:
- deciphering pet food labels and claims
- allergies and intolerances in the domestic cat
- deciding what and how much to feed your particular cat
- the problems and dangers with homemade diets and diet supplements
- why not to feed raw meat, eggs, and milk products
- obesity and how it can affect your cat's health
FELINE BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMSMany pets are destroyed each year because of a variety of inappropriate litter habits, biting, and fighting with other pets. This is a one-to-one individual
session which normally lasts 45 minutes to an hour. A follow-up call is included in the fee.
BASIC HUSBANDRY FOR CAT BREEDERS AND RESCUE WORKERS
Both parts are taught as 3 hour seminars with breaks.
PART ONE:
- understanding the cats nature
- feeding for long term health and the individual's life stage
- feline diseases, parasites, and their transmission
- how vaccinations work, and choosing the right vaccine for a particular situation
- the dangers of having an outside cat
PART TWO:Individual instruction in other areas such as basic genetics for breeders, whelping your first litters etc. may be available. Call and discuss your needs with me.
- isolation of new cats
- reducing stress levels in multi-cat situations
- the care of queens and their kittens
